What does your company do?
Away with White is a full service color, paint and redesign company. I offer color consulting, decorative hand-painted finishes known as “faux finishing,” general contract painting and redesign. I take pride in offering everything needed from start to finish ensuring the most desirable outcome for your project.

top

How are you qualified?
I am an authority on color theory, fine art and design, graduating from art school with high honors while earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In addition to the many years of work experience in various aspects of the industry, I founded Away with White in 2002. The combination of academic achievement and practical work experience provides the foundation of Away with White and the inspiration to help people overcome the doubt and fear of using color in a fresh, new way.

top

Do you help with interior design?
While furnishings and décor have color and are relevant for good color planning, I do not specifically consider myself an interior designer. However, I will work with where you are and what you have, making the most of both. Redesign is a spin on interior design and offers a budget friendly way of accomplishing that goal.

top

What areas do you work?
I have not defined my business boundaries by zip code. However, I primarily focus my efforts from Seattle to Eastside and Anacortes to Tacoma. I also do work along the I-90 corridor as far as the mountain passes. If it is mutually beneficial, I will consider any new project.

top

Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. The first contact is a crucial first step in the consulting process, enabling me to ask important questions, exchange information and ideas and determine the appropriate course of action without any obligation. This is actually the beginning of the consulting process. In cases of great distance, this consultation is done via telephone.

top

How do you charge for your services?
After the free consultation, I can diagnose what services would best meet your needs. We will consider your budget and goals as we define the next step in the process. That next step will determine what fees will be charged for what services and will be thoroughly reviewed and approved before moving forward.

What is faux finishing?
The literal translation is French, meaning "false." The word "faux" has been coined the generic label for any type of hand-painted, decorative finish applied to walls, ceilings, furniture and a variety of other surfaces. Away with White offers faux finishing for these and other substrate surfaces including, fireplace brick, exterior/interior concrete, cabinets, and even light fixtures and hardware.

top

Are faux finishes a passing fad?
Decorative painting has been around since the beginning of man's history, as evidenced by cave painting. The industrial age ushered in the technology to mass print images on paper for wall installations. Wall paper was born and enjoyed being a top trend for it's time. But the desire to create texture, pattern and movement in our surroundings has never waned and faux finishing offers a unique and custom alternative.

top

Can't I just watch a "how to" video and learn to faux finish myself?
Maybe. A professional looking job requires knowledge, experience and talent; things not easily absorbed from a video, book or workshop. A professional looking job requires a professional.

top

I have seen faux finishing before and I didn't like it. My taste is simple. Why would I consider faux finishes?
Whether your taste is simple or more dramatic, there is a faux finish that will suit your style, home and décor. Faux finishing can provide just the right touch to a room, a wall, a ceiling or to accent an architectural feature or create a focal point. It is worth considering.

top

I have never hired anyone for color consulting or faux finishing. How do I decide if I need these services?
Away with White will guide you through the process, offer recommendations, make suggestions and lead you in your decision making with your end goals in mind. The consultation is free so you have nothing to lose.

What is color planning?
Color planning focuses on the background, creating a beautifully coordinated color palette that has variety and continuity. Many factors influence your own custom color plan such as home age and design, architecture, lighting, furnishings, and your lifestyle and preferences. The final product is an easy to follow "blue print" for the execution phase of your project.

top

What are the current trends with color?
While trends come and go, Away with White aims to personalize your color plan, making it meaningful and practical for you. The trend to use color is not going away any time soon.

top

How can I get my house to flow?
Away with White will build a color plan that has a relationship with and between each room. The color plan will serve as a portable tool for you to make desired changes to furnishings and accessories long after the painting is done.

top

I feel stuck and can't make a decision. How do I take a first step?
This is very common; you are not alone. Most people don't know where or how to start? Away with White can help motivate you by taking the mystery and fear out of using color in a fresh, new way. You can finally do Away with White!

My realtor suggests I paint my house a white or a neutral to make it sell. Is this good advice?
While realtors may suggest this approach, they may be the only ones. Homes sell when prospective buyers can see themselves living in the house. Your color choices and decorating will do more to positively influence buyers than relying on a boring backdrop with a sparsely furnished interior. Remember, 10 out of 10 people will eventually repaint a home to their own liking anyway. But a home that makes an impact will close the deal.

top

If I am planning many changes, should I choose my colors and paint first or buy furnishings and accessories before deciding colors?
This is a common question. There is no "right" answer except to say do what works for you. If you can easily decide on furnishings and décor, making them work together effectively, start there. If you are paralyzed by too many choices and stalled in doing anything, color consulting can untie the knots and move you forward, setting you on a path to complete your home.

top

What is redesign?
Redesign is a spin on design, only instead of buying new furnishings and décor, the redesigner can make use of the things you already have. By simply rearranging the placement of the furniture, wall hangings and accessories, we can achieve a more functional traffic pattern, more room, and a more pleasing space all together. If you can avoid the expense of new things, it can be a big savings in your overall plan.

With so many painters out there, how do I choose a good one?
Ask good questions, look for experience and professionalism and require a current copy of a state operating license and registration with Washington State Labor and Industries. Registration with our state automatically confirms that the contractor is licensed, bonded and insured.

top

Why is there such a price difference with painters?
Unlicensed contractors don’t pay the same operating expenses and can offer cheaper rates. However, all the liability rests with you! Also, significant price differences should raise a red flag that something is off. That something could mean short cuts, inferior products or application, or inability to deliver high end results. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for and a perceived up front savings could mean more cost in the end.

top

How can I be sure my painter is licensed and insured? And does it really matter?
Go to http://www.lni.wa.gov to check the status of your contractor. Beware of paint contractors who offer you cash discounts with no sales tax and nothing in writing. While the initial savings may sound good, you are at risk and liable for anything that goes wrong. And it is against the law to avoid sales tax. Your home owners insurance will not apply to any peril caused by a professionally hired commercial service in or at your home.

top

My house exterior was painted in the past with no issues. Is it a good idea to use the same painter for the interior?
Maybe. Be sure your painter is experienced and technically near perfect to work on your interior. Exterior work requires much less skill and precision so be selective about matching the ability with the job.

top

I have always done all my own painting. Why would I consider hiring someone else?
Many people can paint but not all people should. Professionals have the experience, knowledge, equipment and time to do the job right…the first time, allowing you the leisure to use and enjoy your home. In the end, it is worth evaluating the difference between your time and energy with the cost to have work done professionally in a matter of days.
